Party Like It's 1509

Let's pretend I'm a Henry the VIII enthusiast. The man had multiple wives (not all at the same time), bred countless children, broke away from the Catholic Church (so bad ass man), oh and like totally wrote a song.

Yes, apparently Henry the VIII knew how to party. How does the King of England in 1509 party? He parties with good company!

Sometimes Too Much

But, then writing about everyone's pain will be too much. I'll seem to last forever and salvation will be unattainable.

And It Hurts

And sometimes it hurt too much to write it. But, rereading through some lines, I can feel the pain again. If I could, I wish I could write away everyone's pain with my lines.

Please Don't Support Chick-fil-A

Rant time.

I'm queer. Bi, not straight; whatever. As much as I'd like to tell you to drop your support for Chick-Fil-A because of my sexual orientation, I will resist. Why? Because that's fucking bull shit.

Do not support Chick-fil-A because it's a fast food joint. Yes, I'd love to pay premium for some lard dipped in lard please; thank you very much. Yes, I'd love to pay premium for ingesting some crippled excuse for nutrition, thank you very much. Yes, please charge me premium for watered down chemical filled diet lemonade; why thank you very much. Oh, and can I have a side order of mystery flavored chemicals? Yes, the barbeque sauce.

Full of shit. Don't eat crap, your body doesn't like it.

From the Heart

Sometimes when I write, I build up a lot of emotions from past experiences and transform the accordingly. I did that with Rose Colored Lenses; Jaded Prescription. I took all the heartbreak and all the love I've ever felt and transformed them into a story.

Double Poetry Book Release

Back in the day, before I had dreams of becoming a publisher, I began exploring the World Wide Web. I started in the usual places, ie Live Journal, and slowly dipped my toes into various forums, online rooms, and other semi-anonymous areas where you meet strangers.

I found Nathan Alan Schwartz that way. The details of how we went from strangers to friends are pretty sketchy at this point. However, Nathan's a poet, and I'm a poet, so things just work. We complain to each other that we're sucky poets, then we edit each others poems. And when we go through writer's blocks, we discuss our varied musical tastes and somehow Tom Waits has to win; but I digress.

I admire his writing and it's an honor to release my print poetry book at the same time as his. When, you say? Well soon. It's quite the process ;)

MM 23 July 2012

If you could see me writing this post, you'd probably see me sitting in my desk area. There's a bottle of water that I haven't touched and a whole bunch of scribbled sheets with notes. On the inside, my stomach is threatening an apocalypse and my heart has turned into a tight ball of rubber bands.

Feels grim. But, it's something I'm will have to do. Starting tomorrow, no matter how grim I feel, I am going to post snippets of Rose Colored Lenses; Jaded Prescription. I worked, and worked, and poked at the poems, the design, and the final edits for the past few months.

To help me, or destroy me, I've created several 'love song' playlists to keep the blog mood on the topic of love. Here's the first playlist.

This is What Democracy Looks Like

Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 183. For today’s prompt, take the phrase “This Is What (Blank) Looks Like,” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem.

One thought rules all;
Destruction soon follows.
Clutching our poisonous
Thoughts, we aim to dispel
Socrates away—into the
Distance where we cast
Our ballots for our own
Personal cause.
Democratically, self-rightously,
We file on to the side
Clutching our rights
to execute our voice.
In choreographed step,
We feed our death sentence
Into Socrates, drinking up
to his fill. He walks until
Feeling eases out of his body,
not far enough to quenche our pain.
But he walked until he couldn't anymore.
He lies down upon the cold
Slab of stone, weathered by our fears
And opposing ideologies.
One hand on our pain,
The other hand on his feet
We pinch our pain onto
His numb legs, his body lost
to any response.
His heart grows numb.
At last, he chides us,
Asking us to pay our debt.
But, we've forgotten.
Refuse to meet demands.
And so we combine like-minded
Idealogies and practices.
Rummaging amongst ourselves,
Starved for our power
That will rule all.

A Few Thoughts About the Fifty Shades Trilogy

I've read many awful stories in my short life time. Stories with hideous plots, with awful writing, with a small resemblance of little things that are neat. Coincidentally, I've written many awful stories so I totally sympathize with Erika Leonard (pseudonym E. L. James). Sympathize, because it appears that James didn't rewrite the original Twilight fanfic before publishing the Fifty Shades Trilogy.

Writing specifics aside, and spoilers, the Fifty Shades of Grey is a romance novel. Hot shot rich entrepreneur seduces college graduate, teaches her kinky ways, they get into an uncomfortable situation, and she leaves him. Fifty Shades Darker explains major tension between the lovers. In Fifty Shades Freed, James packs up the main story line with bumbling children and a new side to the two characters.

I'm really glad I read it, though. It's almost an exercise in editing. Generally speaking, the trilogy is a sin against all literary sacraments. However, I like how James crafted antagonist elements: a hard to bear past, a jealous ex-lover, a ghostly ex-lover, and a very bitter commissions editor/childhood acquaintance. Very well done James.

However, I think I skipped 95% of the “erotic scenes” (IKEA erotica scenes) and kinda glazed through the other aspects of the trilogy. I might, though, read another book by the author. Just to see if she picks up the craft or continues her writing ways. We'll see.

*Edit. If you read the books and have a favorite part you should comment and we can talk about them ;)

Call for RGV Poets & Performers

This August 4th, join the Zeitgeist Media Festival global event in McAllen, Texas at Archer Park. This event is designed to be a community gathering that uses the power of the arts to articulate our message of making the world a better place for all people. There are many talented artists, performers, and poets in the Rio Grande Valley, and we would invite all of them to help plan and participate in our first Media Festival.

If you are interested in performing or helping out you can join the FB Event, contact Frank Flores from the RGV Zeitgeist Movement, (or me) and we'll sign you up.

Over Mountains

Day 12 of my creativity project. It's kind of interesting how in the beginning of this project I didn't really want to do any editing to the original poem (the text you see)... but this project makes me inspect each line for impact. Which is good, editing is a tough job and learning how to do it better is good.
